New 3rd Generation of RoboCylinder RCS3 Slider Actuators with High-End Servo Motor

New product presentation by IAI at Hannover Messe 2011

At the Hanover trade fair, the Japanese IAI, world market leader in linear axes, presents the RoboCylinder RCS3-SA8 series, as market release for its advanced, 3rd generation 230V RCS servo cylinder series.
The IAI product range currently encompasses the RoboCylinder brand comprising 8 linear drive series with over 100 model types in individual, industry-specific variants. In February 2011, the linear actuator specialist delivered its millionth linear axis since the founding of the company 35 years ago.

Servo motor drives, as opposed to step motor drives, are always of advantage when dynamics, high precision, and a wear-free, low noise drive are required.
The new 230 V RCS3-SA8C servo slider actuators from IAI are designed for the high-end sector: they meet the highest requirements in respect of lifetime (10,000 km), precision (±0.01 mm), acceleration (up to 1 G) and travel speed (up to 1.8 m/s). The feed force of the axes extends from 57 to 340 N with corresponding horizontal loads from 8 to 80 kg. The maximum stroke ranges from 50 to 1100 mm as specified.

The model type RCS3-SA8 is based on aluminium profile with a rectangular, 80 mm wide cross section, whereas the model type RCS3-SS8, constructed using a highly rigid steel profile of the same width, is suitable for rough or hygienically demanding environments such as in the packaging and food industries. For the fulfilment of even stricter hygiene requirements as in the pharmaceutical, semi-conductor or medical technology industries, the clean room models RCS3CR-SA8/SS8 (ISO cleanliness class 4) are also available. In the case of especially restricted installation conditions, the compact versions RCS3-SA/SS8R with identical performance specifications and side mounted 100 or 150 W servo motors are recommended.

For the activation of the slider axes all that is required is a supply and encoder cable connected to the appropriate IAI’s own 1, 2, or 6 axis controllers SCON, SSEL or XSEL. An essential feature of all RoboCylinder axes is the quick and simple commissioning via the purpose built PC software tool, i.e. directly via the teaching pendant.
Software function modules are available for all standard field bus interfaces. In addition to ProfiBus, DeviceNet, CompoNet, CC-Link, Mechatrolink, RS485 and pulse-direction interfaces, the open interfaces EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet and Sercos III will also be available for implementation in industrial Ethernet networks starting from this year.
