Green Automation: 4 New Micro Cylinders for Light Cases

The Japanese global market leader in linear axes, IAI, has expanded its small drives product range Mini RoboCylinder as an important component of its energy efficiency strategy “Green Automation”, introduced in 2008. 24V micro cylinders are now available with servo motors, in addition to linear or stepper motors.
High-precision ball screws with an accuracy class of C10 and brushless 24VDC servo motors also enable the rotary movement to be transformed into linear stroke or traction motion. The four new micro cylinders RCA2-RA2/SA2 (rod/slider types, each available with space-saving side motors) expand IAI’s Mini RoboCylinder programme to a total of 46 models. They enable linear movement with travel deviation of a maximum of 20 µm over an absolute useful travel length of 25 to 100 mm.
With axis widths of 18 mm (RCA2-RA2), i.e. 20 mm (RCA2-SA2) and axis lengths of 114 to 249 mm the micro cylinders weight is between 170 and 280 g, depending on the stroke length. With travel speeds of up to 200 mm/s, loads of a maximum of 0.5 to 2 kg can be transported horizontally and 0.25 to 1 kg vertically.
A combination of flexible add-on components such as replaceable 5 W servo motors and high resolution encoders ensure high precision and are especially suited for demanding positioning tasks such as the adjustment of optical systems, fibre optic applications or micro adjustment drives in the medical technology field.
IAI recommends simple 2/3 point positioners of the type ASEP as the appropriate controller for the new RCA2-RA2/SA2 models. These very inexpensive controllers operate analogous to the signal processing of a pneumatic cylinder circuit. In future – as is standard with all IAI axes – other controllers or gateways will be available in addition to field bus interfaces such as ProfiBus, i.e. the industrial Ethernet interfaces EtherCat and EtherNet/IP.
